October 2025 Fire Prevention

Fire Prevention Week 2025 runs from October 5–11, and this year’s theme from the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) is “Charge into Fire Safety: Lithium-Ion Batteries in Your Home.” The focus is on educating the public about the safe use, charging, and disposal of lithium-ion batteries, which power many of our everyday devices—from smartphones and laptops to e-bikes and power tools.

Lithium-ion batteries are efficient and compact, but they pose serious fire risks when damaged, improperly charged, or disposed of incorrectly. Fires caused by these batteries are not ordinary—they are chemical reactions that can reach temperatures of nearly 5,000°F, three times hotter than gasoline fires. These fires also release toxic gases and can reignite hours or even days after appearing extinguished, making them particularly dangerous in residential settings.

Fires involving micro-mobility devices like e-bikes and scooters have surged.

To prevent these fires, NFPA recommends several key safety practices. First, always buy batteries and devices from reputable manufacturers that meet safety standards. Use only the charger that came with your device and avoid charging batteries overnight or near flammable materials. If a battery shows signs of swelling, overheating, or emits an unusual odor, stop using it immediately and seek professional help. Never dispose of lithium-ion batteries in regular trash—use designated recycling programs to prevent fires in waste facilities.

In addition to battery-specific precautions, general fire safety remains essential. Ensure your home has working smoke alarms on every level, keep a fire extinguisher nearby, and practice a home fire escape plan with your family. These steps can save lives in the event of any fire, including those caused by batteries.
