SRFD June 2025 3
  • Know Your Limits: Choose trails that match your fitness level and experience. Don't overestimate your abilities!
  • Plan Your Hike: Research the trail, check the weather, and inform someone of your plans. Always have a map and know your route
  • Dress Appropriately: Wear proper footwear, light-colored breathable clothing, a hat, and sunscreen. Hiking poles can help with stability
  • Stay Hydrated: Bring MORE water than you think you'll need. TURN BACK when you've consumed HALF your water. Avoid drinking untreated water from streams!
  • Pack Essentials: Carry high-protein snacks, a small medical kit, a compass, and a cell phone. To save the battery life of your phone turn it off or put it on airplane mode.
  • Hike with Others: It's safer and more enjoyable to hike with friends. If hiking alone, inform someone of your trail and expected return time
  • Respect the Trail: Follow trail etiquette by yielding to uphill hikers, not littering, and keeping pets on a leash
  • Stay on the Trail: Avoid getting lost by sticking to marked trails. Straying off can lead to dangerous situations

Monsoon Season in Arizona

SRFD June 2025 4

June 15 to September 30 brings unique challenges for hikers. Here are some essential safety rules to keep in mind to ensure a SAFE and enjoyable hiking experience during this time.

Monsoon Season Safety Tips:

  • Check the Weather: Always check the weather forecast before heading out. Monsoon storms can develop quickly and bring heavy rain, lightning, and flash floods
  • Avoid Canyons and Low-Lying Areas: Flash floods can occur with little warning, especially in canyons and washes. Even if it’s not raining where you are, storms miles away can cause flooding downstream.
  • Stay Alert: Be aware of your surroundings and watch for signs of changing weather. If you hear thunder, you are within striking distance of lightning.
  • Seek Higher Ground: If you get caught in a storm, move to higher ground immediately. Avoid crossing flooded areas as the water can be deceptively strong and carry debris
  • Avoid High Elevations: Lightning strikes are more frequent at higher elevations. Plan your hikes in lower areas during monsoon season.
  • Turn Around, Don’t Drown: Never attempt to cross flooded roads or trails. It’s better to turn back and find a safe route.
